Product Description
The ePTFE oxygen absorbing vent membrane for fresh cut fruit and salad Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) trays is an active packaging component that extends the shelf life and preserves the visual appeal of fresh-cut produce. This advanced membrane combines a highly breathable ePTFE film with an integrated, food-safe oxygen scavenging layer, bonded into a precision die-cut patch that is heat-sealed to the interior of the lidding film or the tray itself. In the sealed MAP package, the fresh-cut fruit or vegetables continue to respire—consuming oxygen and producing carbon dioxide and water vapor. The ePTFE membrane's highly permeable structure allows excess CO₂ to exit and a precisely controlled amount of O₂ to enter, maintaining the optimal modified atmosphere. The integrated oxygen scavenger actively absorbs any residual oxygen that enters the package or that is released from the produce, driving the internal O₂ concentration down to near-zero levels. This dual-action—passive gas exchange plus active oxygen scavenging—dramatically slows the enzymatic browning, respiration, and microbial spoilage of the fresh produce, extending shelf life from days to weeks and reducing food waste.
Fresh-cut fruits (apples, pears, mangoes, melons) and salad greens (lettuce, spinach, arugula) are highly perishable. Once cut, the cells are damaged, releasing enzymes and substrates that cause browning, softening, and off-flavor development. The cut surfaces are also ideal growth media for bacteria and fungi. MAP packaging replaces the air inside the sealed tray with a low-oxygen, high-carbon dioxide gas mixture that slows respiration and microbial growth. However, the produce continues to respire, consuming the remaining O₂ and producing CO₂. If the package is too permeable, O₂ enters and defeats the low-oxygen atmosphere. If it is too impermeable, CO₂ builds up to damaging levels, and the anaerobic conditions can lead to the growth of pathogenic Clostridium botulinum. The ideal package must actively remove any ingress O₂ and precisely regulate CO₂ levels. A simple barrier film cannot do this.
The ePTFE oxygen absorbing vent membrane provides the active atmosphere control that fresh-cut produce demands. The ePTFE base membrane offers exceptionally high gas permeability, allowing CO₂ to diffuse out of the package rapidly, preventing excessive CO₂ accumulation. The integrated oxygen scavenger—typically a food-safe iron-based or enzyme-based chemistry bonded into the membrane structure—actively reacts with and irreversibly binds any oxygen that attempts to enter the package through the membrane or through the film seals. This dual mechanism maintains the package headspace at the optimal low-O₂, moderate-CO₂ composition. The result is that sliced apples stay white and crisp, mixed salad greens remain vibrant and turgid, and the product's shelf life is extended by 50-100% or more compared to passive MAP packaging.

The vent membrane patch is heat-sealed to the interior of the lidding film, directly over a laser-perforated window that allows gas exchange. The tray is filled with fresh-cut produce, flushed with the desired initial gas mixture (e.g., 5% O₂, 10% CO₂, 85% N₂), and sealed. The produce begins to respire. CO₂ diffuses out of the package through the ePTFE membrane, preventing excessive buildup. Any O₂ that tries to enter through the membrane or the seal is instantly captured by the integrated oxygen scavenger, keeping the internal O₂ level near zero. The produce remains in a state of suspended animation, with browning and spoilage dramatically slowed.
-
Identify the specific fruit or vegetable product and its respiration rate to determine the required CO₂ transmission rate and O₂ absorption capacity.
-
Calculate the package volume and fill weight to size the vent patch area.
-
Select the oxygen scavenger type based on the product's moisture content and the desired activation time.
-
Test the complete package: conduct shelf life studies with color measurement (browning index), texture analysis, and microbial counts over the target shelf life period.
-
Ensure the vent patch remains in the headspace area and does not come into direct contact with free water or produce juices.
-
Q: Does the oxygen scavenger pose any food safety risk?
A: The scavenger is fully encapsulated within the membrane structure and does not contact the food. It is composed of food-safe materials compliant with FDA and EU regulations.
-
Q: How quickly does the oxygen scavenger activate after the package is sealed?
A: The scavenger activates immediately upon exposure to the moisture in the package headspace, providing immediate oxygen protection.
-
Q: Will the vent membrane cause the produce to dry out?
A: The membrane is designed to transmit gases (O₂, CO₂) but has a relatively low water vapor transmission rate. It does not cause excessive moisture loss from the produce.
-
Q: Can this vent be used for products that are also sensitive to ethylene gas?
A: The standard vent does not specifically scrub ethylene. For ethylene-sensitive products, an additional ethylene-absorbing sachet can be included in the package.
-
Q: Is the vent recyclable along with the plastic tray and lidding film?
A: The vent is a small, multi-material component. It should be removed and disposed of with the lidding film before recycling the tray, per local recycling guidelines.
