Disposable Infusion Waterproof Vent Membrane

Product Description

Product Overview

The weldable waterproof vent for disposable infusion and transfusion set packaging is a sterile barrier and pressure management component engineered for the high-volume, cost-sensitive medical device market. It integrates a bacteria-retentive, hydrophobic ePTFE membrane with a weldable medical-grade thermoplastic carrier, designed for direct integration into the blister tray, pouch, or rigid packaging of sterile disposable IV administration sets, blood transfusion sets, and infusion pump cassettes. The vent allows the packaging to be sterilized with ethylene oxide gas by providing a pathway for sterilant ingress and post-sterilization aeration, while maintaining a complete sterile barrier after processing. It also provides pressure equalization during the air and truck transport of packaged devices, preventing the pouch bursting or blister collapse that can occur with altitude and temperature changes. The weldable format enables high-speed, automated packaging line integration.

Cause

Disposable infusion and transfusion sets—PVC tubing, drip chambers, roller clamps, and connectors—are packaged in sealed pouches or formed blister trays with Tyvek or medical paper lids. They are sterilized with ethylene oxide gas. The EtO gas must penetrate the packaging, contact all surfaces of the complex device, and then be evacuated during the aeration phase. The packaging material itself provides some gas permeability, but the large internal volume of many sets and the density of the coiled tubing can restrict sterilant flow, leading to incomplete sterilization and the release of non-sterile product. After sterilization, these packages are shipped globally, often by air, where the pressure differential between the sealed package interior and the low-pressure cargo hold can cause pouch seals to rupture or blisters to collapse—rendering the sterile barrier compromised. An integrated vent solves both problems: it provides a high-gas-flow pathway for EtO sterilization and aeration, and a pressure equalization port for transport. The vent must be extremely low-cost to match the disposable, high-volume nature of these products.

Solution

The weldable vent is integrated into the packaging material—typically the Tyvek lid or the PE/PET blister tray—using ultrasonic or heat-stake welding. During EtO sterilization, the sterilant gas flows freely through the 0.2-micron ePTFE membrane into the package, contacting all surfaces of the device. After the cycle, residual EtO is desorbed back through the vent and evacuated from the chamber. The membrane's pore structure maintains the sterile barrier indefinitely after processing. During transport, as the external atmospheric pressure changes, air flows in or out through the vent to equalize the internal package pressure, preventing seal stress and rupture. The hydrophobic membrane prevents any liquid water, moisture, or environmental contaminants from entering the package. The entire vent is designed for cost-effective, high-volume manufacturing and integration.

How It Works

The vent is welded into the Tyvek lid or plastic tray of the device package during the form-fill-seal process. The package containing the disposable device enters the EtO sterilization chamber. EtO gas penetrates the package through the vent membrane, contacting all device surfaces. After the sterilization dwell period, the chamber is evacuated and the aeration cycle begins; residual EtO desorbs from the device and packaging and exits back through the vent. The membrane's 0.2-micron pores remain a sterile barrier. During transport in unpressurized aircraft cargo holds, the vent allows air exchange, keeping the internal package pressure equalized with the external environment, preventing seal stress. In humid environments, the hydrophobic membrane prevents moisture ingress.

How To Choose
  1. Identify the package type and material: Tyvek pouch, formed blister, or combination.
  2. Determine the package internal volume and the required EtO penetration rate to size the vent airflow.
  3. Select the vent carrier material to match the packaging film for optimal welding.
  4. Validate the complete package: EtO sterilization validation (ISO 11135), package integrity testing (ASTM F1929, F2096), and sterile barrier shelf life.
  5. Consider high-speed automated welding integration and line speed requirements.
FAQ
  • Q: Does the vent slow down the EtO sterilization cycle?

A: No, the vent provides a dedicated high-flow pathway that can actually reduce the time required for sterilant penetration and aeration, improving overall cycle efficiency.

  • Q: Will the vent allow bacteria to enter during extended warehouse storage?

A: No, the 0.2-micron membrane is a permanent sterile barrier. Package sterility is maintained for the validated shelf life regardless of the external storage environment.

  • Q: Can the vent be used on packages that undergo pressure testing for seal integrity?

A: The vent will allow air flow during a pressure decay or bubble emission test. The vent itself must be temporarily sealed or masked during these tests, which is standard procedure for vented packages.

  • Q: Is the vent compatible with the heat-seal process used to close the pouch?

A: The vent is installed in a dedicated port area separate from the primary pouch heat seal. It is welded prior to or after the main sealing step without interfering with the seal integrity.

  • Q: How small can the vent be to keep the packaging material cost low?

A: We optimize the vent diameter to the minimum required for adequate EtO penetration and pressure equalization, minimizing material cost for this high-volume application.
