IP68 Stainless Steel Breather Bolt Vent For Transmission Differential
This IP68 stainless steel breather bolt vent is built to survive extreme drivetrain conditions. The vent body is machined from 304 stainless steel, and the core ePTFE membrane offers waterproof and dustproof pressure equalization. Designed for manual transmissions, differentials, and transfer cases, it prevents oil seal failure and water ingress during off-road water crossings. The all-metal construction resists impact, road debris, and aggressive gear oils.
Transmissions and differentials generate significant frictional heat during operation. When a hot metal housing is suddenly submerged in cold water during off-road driving, the internal air cools and contracts violently, creating a strong vacuum. This vacuum can pull muddy water past axle seals and gaskets, contaminating the gear oil. Even without submersion, sealed housings that cannot vent build up pressure and push lubricant past oil seals, causing external leaks.
A stainless steel breather bolt with an IP68-rated ePTFE membrane replaces the solid fill plug or is installed at the highest point of the housing. It continuously equalizes pressure during heating and cooling cycles, reducing stress on seals. The hydrophobic membrane blocks water, silt, and dust even under full immersion. Stainless steel construction provides corrosion resistance against brine and acidic off-road mud, ensuring reliable operation for tens of thousands of miles.

Ideal for off-road vehicle differentials, manual and automatic transmission housings, transfer cases, and heavy-duty planetary gearboxes. Also used in marine stern drives, industrial gear reducers, and agricultural machinery where high shock and mud exposure are expected.
The bolt is threaded into a pre-tapped port on the housing. As the gear oil heats up, expanded air passes through the ePTFE membrane to the atmosphere. When rapid cooling occurs, air returns through the membrane while water is stopped at the surface. The large stainless steel body acts as a heat sink, reducing the chance of membrane icing in freezing conditions and maintaining airflow channels clear of congealed oil mist.
Select the correct thread type and pitch matching your housing port. For competition off-road vehicles, consider extending the breather with a remote tube adapter; this bolt can serve as the base with a push-in hose fitting. Verify the maximum continuous temperature rating exceeds your housing peak temperature; 200°C covers most synthetic gear oil applications.
