The heavy-duty ePTFE drum vent bung for petroleum lubricant and oil drum breathing is a rugged, oil-resistant pressure management component engineered for the demanding bulk lubricant and petroleum product packaging industry. This vent integrates a robust, oleophobic ePTFE waterproof breathable membrane into a heavy-duty, weldable or threaded PP or PE body, designed to be integrated into the 2-inch or 3/4-inch bung of 55-gallon (200L) steel and HDPE drums used for engine oils, hydraulic fluids, gear lubricants, transmission fluids, and industrial greases. During the lifecycle of a lubricant drum—which can include months of outdoor storage in extreme climates, exposure to solar heating, and transport across altitude gradients—the vent continuously equalizes the internal drum pressure. It prevents the vacuum that can collapse the steel drum head or distort the plastic drum wall, and prevents the over-pressurization that can blow out the bung seal and cause messy, environmentally hazardous oil leaks. The oleophobic membrane treatment is critical: it prevents the long-chain hydrocarbon molecules in the oil from wetting and clogging the pores, ensuring the vent remains fully breathable even after prolonged contact with oil mist and splashes.
Lubricating oils and petroleum products are the lifeblood of industry, shipped globally in 55-gallon drums. These drums face extreme thermal conditions: a drum of engine oil stored outdoors in the Middle East can reach internal temperatures exceeding 70°C during the day, then cool to 20°C at night. A drum shipped from a refinery in Texas to a mine site in the Andes goes from sea level to 4000 meters. Each of these temperature and altitude changes creates a significant internal pressure differential. An unvented steel drum will "oil can"—the head will flex in and out with each pressure cycle, eventually fatiguing the metal and causing a leak at the chime. An unvented HDPE drum will bulge and distort. When a user opens a pressurized drum, the sudden release can spray oil. This vent provides the continuous breathing necessary to keep the drum pressure-neutral and its contents safely contained.
The heavy-duty ePTFE drum vent bung is built for the rigors of the petroleum industry. The vent body is made from impact-resistant PP or PE, and the ePTFE membrane is treated with a permanent oleophobic coating that repels the hydrocarbon molecules in engine oil, hydraulic fluid, and gear oil. The membrane provides continuous, high-airflow breathing to equalize pressure during all thermal and altitude cycles. It is a complete liquid barrier, ensuring zero oil leakage even if the drum is accidentally tipped or stored on its side. The vent can be welded into a plastic bung plug for integration into steel drums, or welded directly into an HDPE drum head.
