The M16 automotive headlight anti-fog breather bolt is a dedicated moisture management solution featuring an embedded ePTFE waterproof membrane. This threaded vent replaces a standard blanking plug to introduce controlled ventilation directly into the lamp housing. It eliminates internal misting, prevents external water ingestion during pressure washing, and maintains optical clarity. Designed for modern complex-curve headlamp assemblies, it meets stringent automotive durability standards.
Modern headlights use high-intensity bulbs that generate intense local heat. When the lamp is switched off, especially in cool or humid conditions, the rapid temperature drop creates a strong vacuum effect. Ordinary seals cannot prevent moist ambient air from entering through microscopic gaps in wiring grommets or lens bonds. This trapped humidity condenses on the cold outer lens, scattering light and reducing visibility. Repeated cycles lead to permanent water spotting and reflector corrosion.
The M16 breather bolt with ePTFE membrane is installed at a high, protected point on the headlight rear housing. It allows the lamp to “exhale" hot, moisture-laden air while cooling and to “inhale" dry air via the membrane. Because the membrane is impermeable to liquid water, road splash and power-washer jets cannot penetrate. The result is a permanently clear lens without the risk of seal blowout caused by blocked vents.

Specifically engineered for automotive headlight and rear combination lamp housings. Suitable for LED, HID, and halogen lamp types. Can also be used in fog lamp assemblies and daytime running light modules. The material is optimized for direct exposure to under-hood chemical vapors and road salt.
When the headlight heats up, internal air expands and exits through the ePTFE membrane, carrying water vapor. When the light cools, external air passes back through the same membrane, but water droplets are blocked by surface tension and the tortuous pore structure. This two-way air exchange ensures that the dew point inside the housing remains below the glass temperature, so condensation never occurs.
Measure the housing port thread carefully; M16 is common for larger headlamp units. Consider the operating temperature: if the lamp uses HID or high-watt halogen, ensure the plastic body is rated for continuous 125°C. For commercial vehicles frequently exposed to pressure washers, IP69K-rated versions provide extra security against hot water jets.
A: If installed as a direct replacement of an OEM breather plug with identical specifications, no. However, drilling a new hole in a sealed housing will likely void the warranty.
A: It is strongly recommended to install it with the membrane facing sideways or upward to allow any condensed water droplets to drain away by gravity.
A: Under normal conditions, the ePTFE membrane lasts the life of the headlight. Inspect during bulb replacement and replace if visibly clogged with debris.
