Product Description

Product Overview

The adhesive medical-grade vent for virus transport medium (VTM) and specimen collection tubes is a sterile, high-integrity barrier component engineered for the critical pre-analytical phase of diagnostic testing. This vent integrates a 0.2-micron sterilizing-grade ePTFE membrane with a validated medical-grade adhesive carrier, designed for direct application to the caps and closures of tubes and bottles used for collecting, transporting, and storing nasopharyngeal swabs, saliva samples, blood specimens, and other clinical samples. It provides a sterile, bacteria-retentive and virus-retentive airway that allows the tube to equalize pressure during air transport and temperature changes, preventing cap pop-off, tube leakage, and the contamination of the sample and the surrounding environment. By maintaining the integrity of the primary container, this vent ensures that the collected specimen reaches the testing laboratory in the same condition as it was collected, preserving the accuracy of PCR, antigen, and culture-based diagnostic results.

Cause

Virus transport medium tubes and specimen collection containers are the first link in the diagnostic chain for infectious diseases including COVID-19, influenza, RSV, and sexually transmitted infections. These tubes contain a liquid medium designed to preserve viral RNA or maintain bacterial viability. They are collected in clinical settings, transported via courier and air freight, and subjected to varying pressures, temperatures, and handling conditions. A tube that is sealed without a vent will develop internal pressure or vacuum as the external temperature and altitude change. Over-pressurization can cause the cap to loosen or "pop," leaking biohazardous fluid and exposing the courier or laboratory staff to infectious material. Vacuum can suck external contaminants—including airborne bacteria and fungi from the transport cooler—into the tube, potentially interfering with culture-based diagnostics or causing sample degradation. A simple open vent would breach the required biological containment. The tube must breathe without leaking and without admitting microorganisms.

Solution

The adhesive medical-grade vent provides a secure, sterile breathing pathway directly on the specimen tube cap. Applied over a small vent aperture via pressure-sensitive adhesive, the ePTFE membrane allows the tube's internal pressure to continuously equalize with the external environment. The membrane's 0.2-micron pore size is a recognized sterilizing-grade barrier, physically blocking bacteria, fungi, and viral particles (which are typically 0.02-0.4 microns and are further blocked by the membrane's tortuous path and hydrophobic nature). The tube can be transported in unpressurized aircraft cargo holds or across extreme temperature gradients without cap loosening or tube collapse. If the tube is accidentally tipped or inverted, the hydrophobic membrane prevents the liquid transport medium from leaking out, containing the biohazard. The adhesive carrier bonds permanently to the tube cap material—typically polypropylene or polyethylene—and withstands the freezing temperatures (-20°C to -80°C) often used for specimen storage.

How It Works

The vent is applied over a precision aperture in the specimen tube cap. As the sealed tube experiences temperature changes—from room temperature during collection to refrigerated transport and back—or altitude changes in air freight, air flows through the ePTFE membrane's nanopores to equalize internal and external pressure. The 0.2-micron pore structure physically blocks the passage of bacteria, yeast, molds, and viral particles, maintaining the sample's biological integrity. The hydrophobic property prevents the liquid transport medium from escaping, even under the pressure changes of flight or if the tube is inverted. The freeze-thaw stable adhesive remains bonded to the cap through repeated cycles of freezing (-80°C) and thawing, a common procedure for archival samples.

How To Choose
  1. Identify the specimen type and the transport medium to ensure chemical compatibility with the membrane and adhesive.
  2. Determine the tube volume and expected temperature/pressure extremes during transport to size the vent airflow.
  3. Select the adhesive for the specific tube cap material (PP, PE, etc.) and confirm adhesion after freeze-thaw cycling.
  4. Validate the biological barrier: bacterial and viral challenge testing with the specific organisms of concern.
  5. Test the complete tube assembly: pressure differential, leak, and drop testing per IATA and DOT transport regulations for infectious substances.
FAQ
  • Q: Can the vent prevent the leakage of a positive COVID-19 sample during air transport?

A: Yes, the hydrophobic membrane and strong adhesive seal prevent any liquid leakage. The vent also equalizes the pressure changes that can cause cap loosening, a common cause of leakage in unvented tubes.

  • Q: Does the 0.2-micron pore size block SARS-CoV-2 viral particles?

A: The ePTFE membrane's tortuous pore structure and hydrophobic properties provide a high-efficiency barrier to viral particles. While the individual virus particle is smaller than 0.2 microns, viruses are typically transported in aerosolized droplets that are much larger, and the membrane's mechanism of capture through multiple layers provides an effective barrier validated by standard challenge tests.

  • Q: Will the vent allow my sample to dry out during long-term frozen storage?

A: The vent allows only minimal gas exchange for pressure equalization. Evaporative loss through the vent at -80°C is negligible over the typical storage duration.

  • Q: Can the vent be pre-sterilized and applied to a sterile tube in a cleanroom?

A: Yes, we supply gamma-sterilized vents in validated sterile packaging for aseptic application during tube manufacturing or laboratory processing.

  • Q: Is the vent compatible with the guanidine thiocyanate or other chaotropic salts used in some VTM?

A: ePTFE is chemically inert to chaotropic salts. We recommend a compatibility test with your specific VTM formulation to confirm long-term adhesive and membrane integrity.
