Product Description

Weldable EPTFE Waterproof Vent For Car Horn & Alarm Sounders

Product Overview

The weldable ePTFE waterproof vent for car horns and alarm sounders is a rugged pressure equalization component specifically designed for the harsh, exposed mounting locations of automotive acoustic warning devices. It combines a durable thermoplastic body with a high-performance ePTFE waterproof breathable membrane, engineered for direct ultrasonic or heat-stake welding into the horn housing or sounder enclosure. This vent provides continuous pressure equalization as the horn's electromagnetic coil or piezoelectric element generates heat during operation, and as the device experiences rapid temperature changes from engine bay heat, rain, and car washes. It maintains an absolute barrier against water, mud, road salt, dust, and debris that would otherwise accumulate inside the horn housing, causing corrosion of the diaphragm, deterioration of the acoustic chamber, and progressive loss of sound output and frequency accuracy. By keeping the horn internals dry and pressure-neutral, this vent ensures reliable, consistent audible warnings for vehicle safety throughout the horn's service life.

Cause

Car horns and alarm sounders are mounted in some of the vehicle's most exposed positions: behind the front grille, in the lower bumper area, in wheel arches for alarm sirens, and in the engine compartment. These locations subject the horn to direct water spray, road splash, mud, salt, and debris impact. Simultaneously, the horn generates internal heat during operation—the electromagnetic coil in a disc horn or snail horn heats up during a prolonged honk, and the electronic driver in a piezoelectric sounder dissipates heat continuously when the alarm is armed. This thermal cycling, combined with external water quenching, creates repetitive internal pressure fluctuations. The cooling vacuum pulls in moisture-laden air and liquid water past the horn's diaphragm seal, mounting gasket, and electrical connector. Water inside the horn housing rusts the steel diaphragm, corrodes the coil windings, shifts the acoustic tuning, and eventually causes the horn to fail to produce the required sound pressure level and frequency. Regulatory standards (ECE R28, SAE J, etc.) mandate minimum sound levels; a water-damaged horn can fall below legal limits, becoming a safety inspection failure.

Solution

The weldable ePTFE vent provides a permanent, integrated breathing pathway for horn and sounder housings. The vent body is molded from a thermoplastic matched to the horn housing material—commonly polyamide (PA), polypropylene (PP), or ABS—ensuring a strong, homogeneous weld that will not crack, leak, or separate. The ePTFE membrane continuously equalizes internal pressure as the horn heats and cools, preventing the vacuum that draws water and moisture inward. The membrane is completely waterproof, with a typical water entry pressure exceeding 100 kPa, blocking rain, splash, and even temporary submersion. Its oleophobic treatment resists wetting by engine oils, road film, and de-icing chemicals. The vent plug's compact, low-profile design fits into the horn's existing housing geometry without requiring acoustic chamber redesign, and the weldable format enables clean, high-speed automated assembly.

How It Works

The weldable vent is integrated into the horn housing at a protected location—typically on a rear or side face, shielded from direct road spray. When the horn is activated and the electromagnetic coil or piezoelectric element generates heat, the expanding internal air flows through the ePTFE membrane's nanopores and escapes. When the horn cools, filtered ambient air is drawn back in. This cycle eliminates the pressure differential that would otherwise pump moisture through the diaphragm seal and connector gasket. The membrane's 0.2-0.5 micron pore size physically blocks water, mud, and dust ingress. The welded bond creates a permanent, inseparable seal between the vent body and horn housing. The vent's acoustic transparency ensures that it does not whistle, hiss, or otherwise affect the horn's sound pressure level, frequency spectrum, or directional pattern.

How To Choose
  1. Identify the horn housing material to select a matching thermoplastic vent body for optimal weld compatibility.
  2. Calculate the horn's internal air volume and expected temperature rise during a typical maximum-duration activation to determine required airflow.
  3. Determine the horn's mounting location and exposure level: direct wheel spray areas require higher water entry pressure ratings and labyrinth protection.
  4. For EV pedestrian warning sounders that operate continuously at lower sound levels, account for steady-state heat generation and constant pressure equalization needs.
  5. Provide a CAD model of the intended weld port for custom vent body design and weld tooling compatibility assessment.
FAQ
  • Q: Does the vent affect the horn's sound output or frequency?
A: No, the vent is designed to be acoustically neutral at the frequencies and sound pressure levels produced by automotive horns. It introduces no measurable change in SPL, frequency, or sound quality.
  • Q: Can the vent withstand the vibration and shock loads experienced by a chassis-mounted horn?
A: Yes, the welded bond is rigid and durable. The ePTFE membrane is flexible and fatigue-resistant. The vent assembly withstands the vibration profiles specified by major OEM standards.
  • Q: How does the vent prevent water from entering when the horn is submerged during water fording?
A: The membrane's high water entry pressure prevents liquid ingress even under the hydrostatic pressure experienced during temporary submersion in water crossings.
  • Q: Is the vent compatible with the thin wall sections typical of horn housings?
A: We can design the vent body with a weld flange optimized for thin-wall welding, ensuring a strong bond without burn-through or distortion of the housing.
  • Q: Can the vent be installed after the horn is fully assembled, or does it require integration during housing molding?
A: The vent is typically welded in place after housing molding, as part of the horn assembly process. Retrofitting into existing assembled horns is possible with access to the weld port.
