Product Overview
The miniature waterproof breathable screw vent offers precision pressure equalization for compact electronic housings. Available in M5 and M6 thread sizes, it integrates a tiny yet effective ePTFE membrane into a diminutive metal or plastic body. This vent protects automotive ECUs, sensors, and small handheld instruments from moisture ingress while allowing them to adapt to ambient pressure changes without housing distortion.

Cause
Electronic control units and sensitive sensors are often fully potted or gasket-sealed against automotive fluids. However, the small internal air pockets still expand and contract with temperature, leading to excessive stress on the potting compound and wire bonds. Even a tiny amount of condensation can corrupt a MEMS sensor or cause leakage currents on a PCB. Conventional vents are too large to fit these miniaturized enclosures.

Solution
The M5 or M6 miniature screw vent occupies minimal footprint, screwing directly into a blind threaded hole in the housing wall. The ePTFE membrane provides a bi-directional airflow path, maintaining zero differential pressure. It stops water, dirt, and chemicals from entering while allowing the housing to breathe. The result is extended sensor life and consistent output accuracy without mechanical deformation.

How It Works
As the sensor module warms up from electronics or external heat, internal pressure rises. Air exits through the membrane’s nanopores. When the unit cools, air returns. The membrane pore size is below 0.2 microns, blocking liquid water and dust particles. Because the airflow rate is matched to the tiny internal volume, pressure equalization happens almost instantaneously.

How To Choose
Measure the available boss thickness and select a thread that provides at least four full threads engagement. For sensor applications where metal contamination is a concern, choose the plastic PA66 body. Consider the airflow: if the unit has a slightly larger volume, specify the M6 version for higher flow.
