Nutrient Solution Containers Vent

Product Description

Product Overview

The breathable medical vent for enteral feeding and nutrient solution containers is a sterile, bacteria-retentive pressure equalization component designed for the specialized requirements of enteral nutrition delivery systems. This vent integrates a hydrophobic, low-extractable ePTFE membrane with a weldable or adhesive medical-grade carrier, engineered for integration into ready-to-hang (RTH) enteral feeding bottles, prefilled nutrient solution bags, and enteral feeding pump reservoirs. It provides a sterile airway that allows filtered ambient air to enter the container as the thick, viscous nutrient formula is pumped or gravity-fed to the patient, preventing the vacuum that would collapse the container and stop flow. The vent maintains the sterility of the enteral formula throughout the feeding period—which can extend up to 24-48 hours for continuous feeding—protecting the immunocompromised or critically ill patient from bacterial contamination that could lead to life-threatening sepsis.

Cause

Enteral nutrition is delivered to patients who cannot eat normally but have a functional gastrointestinal tract. The liquid formula—a complex emulsion of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, and minerals—is supplied in sterile, sealed containers. For continuous feeding, an enteral feeding pump delivers the formula at a controlled rate over many hours. As the thick formula is withdrawn, the container volume decreases, and air must enter to replace it. Without sterile venting, a vacuum builds, causing the flexible bag or semi-rigid bottle to collapse and the pump to alarm, interrupting feeding. Clinicians may resort to spiking the container with an unsterile air vent, introducing bacteria directly into the nutrient-rich formula where it multiplies rapidly at body temperature. Enteral formula contamination is a known cause of nosocomial infection, particularly in neonatal and intensive care settings. The container vent must be sterile, protect against contamination throughout the extended feeding duration, and be compatible with the viscous, oily formula that can wet and clog conventional hydrophobic membranes.

Solution

The breathable medical vent provides a dedicated sterile air intake that is integral to the feeding container. The 0.2-micron ePTFE membrane is sterilizing-grade, providing an absolute bacterial barrier. As the enteral pump withdraws formula, sterile ambient air is drawn through the membrane into the container, instantly replacing the dispensed volume. The hydrophobic membrane is treated with an oleophobic coating to resist wetting by the lipid component of the enteral formula, ensuring that the pores remain open and breathable even after prolonged contact with the oily emulsion. The vent is welded or bonded into the container cap or film, providing a permanent, leak-tight seal. It is compatible with the thermal sterilization processes used for enteral formula containers, including retort and aseptic processing.

How It Works

The vent is integrated into the enteral formula container cap or film during manufacturing. After the container is filled with sterile formula and sealed, it is thermally sterilized. During sterilization, the vent allows pressure equalization. In clinical use, the container is hung and the feeding set is connected. As the enteral pump or gravity flow withdraws formula, air is drawn into the container through the vent's ePTFE membrane. The 0.2-micron pore structure blocks all airborne bacteria, fungi, and particulates, ensuring that only sterile air enters. The oleophobic membrane treatment prevents the lipid fraction of the formula from wetting and clogging the pores. The container empties completely and smoothly, delivering the full prescribed volume of nutrition to the patient.

How To Choose
  1. Identify the enteral formula type: standard polymeric, high-protein, or elemental, noting the lipid content and viscosity.

  2. Determine the container type and volume to size the vent airflow for the maximum feeding pump flow rate.

  3. Select the sterilization method (retort, aseptic) and confirm vent material compatibility and stability.

  4. Validate oleophobic resistance with the specific enteral formula through long-term contact testing.

  5. Test the complete container system: feeding pump compatibility, flow rate consistency, bacterial challenge, and extended-duration use simulation.

FAQ
  • Q: Will the lipid content of the enteral formula eventually break through the oleophobic membrane?
A: The oleophobic treatment is specifically engineered to resist wetting by the lipid emulsions in enteral formulas for the full labeled feeding duration. We validate this through long-term contact testing with your specific formula.

  • Q: Can the vent support the high flow rates required for bolus feeding?
A: Yes, the vent airflow is sized to support both slow continuous feeding (10-200 ml/hr) and rapid bolus feeding (up to 500 ml/hr or more).

  • Q: Is the vent compatible with the retort sterilization process used for many RTH bottles?
A: Yes, the ePTFE membrane and PP carrier withstand retort temperatures up to 121°C, making them compatible with standard enteral product sterilization.

  • Q: Does the vent allow the enteral formula to dry out or concentrate during extended feeding?
A: The vent allows gas exchange for pressure equalization only. The minimal air exchange does not cause significant evaporative loss or concentration of the formula over the feeding period.

  • Q: Can the vent be used with formulas containing medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) that are particularly aggressive wetting agents?
A: We offer an enhanced oleophobic membrane specifically validated for MCT-containing formulas. Consult our team for compatibility testing with your specific MCT formulation.
