Cause

Microwave cooking of packaged foods relies on steam. The water molecules in the food absorb microwave energy, vaporize, and create a hot, pressurized steam environment inside the sealed package. This steam cooks the food rapidly and evenly. However, the steam pressure builds quickly and can easily exceed the burst strength of the thin, flexible lidding film. The result is a violent "pop" and a messy eruption of hot food and steam inside the microwave. To prevent this, consumers are instructed to "pierce film" or "vent corner" before cooking—a step that is often forgotten, inconsistently performed, and can lead to burns. If the package is simply left unsealed, the steam escapes too quickly, and the food cooks unevenly, dries out, and becomes tough. A self-venting patch provides the ideal solution: it contains the steam for optimal cooking, then automatically releases it before the pressure becomes destructive.

Solution

The ePTFE steam release vent patch is applied to the lidding film during the packaging process. The patch consists of a layer of ePTFE membrane with a precisely controlled pore structure. Under normal atmospheric pressure, the membrane's hydrophobic pores are small enough to block liquid water and bacteria but allow gas exchange. As the package heats in the microwave, the internal steam pressure rises. At a designed pressure threshold—typically 50-150 mbar—the increased pressure differential forces the pores open wider, allowing a controlled, directed release of excess steam. The vent does not pop open violently; it releases steam in a quiet, continuous stream. When the microwave stops and the package cools, the internal pressure drops, the membrane's pores return to their normal size, and the vent effectively reseals against external contaminants. The food remains moist, evenly cooked, and protected from drying out.

How It Works

The vent patch is heat-sealed to the interior or exterior surface of the lidding film, directly over a pre-punched or laser-cut aperture. The tray is filled with food, sealed with the vented lidding film, and frozen or refrigerated. The consumer places the unopened package directly in the microwave. As the food heats, steam is generated. The internal pressure rises. When the pressure reaches the vent's activation threshold, the ePTFE membrane's pores dynamically expand, allowing a controlled stream of steam to escape. The package does not balloon or burst. The steam is released quietly and directionally. When the microwave stops, the internal pressure drops, the membrane pores recover their original size, and the vent reseals. The consumer removes the package and peels back the lidding film, revealing perfectly cooked, moist food.
