Product Description
The weldable breathable vent for endoscope and surgical camera sterile barrier packaging is a high-durability, high-temperature sterilization vent engineered for the sophisticated reusable medical imaging devices that are central to minimally invasive surgery. This vent integrates a medical-grade, highly hydrophobic ePTFE membrane with a robust, heat-resistant weldable carrier, designed for direct integration into the rigid sterilization cases and trays used to store, sterilize, and transport flexible and rigid endoscopes, surgical camera heads, laparoscopes, and fiber optic light cables. It allows the free penetration of steam, ethylene oxide, or hydrogen peroxide vapor into the case during sterilization, and the subsequent evaporation and aeration of residual moisture and sterilant. After the cycle, it maintains a permanent sterile barrier, protecting the expensive, delicate optics and electronics from environmental contamination during storage and transport to the operating room. The vent withstands hundreds of autoclave cycles without performance degradation.
Surgical endoscopes and cameras are precision optical-electronic instruments costing tens of thousands of dollars each. They must be terminally sterilized between uses. The instruments are placed in dedicated rigid sterilization containers or trays that protect them from physical damage during handling and transport. These containers must allow the sterilant to reach all instrument surfaces—including the narrow channels of an endoscope—and then must allow the instrument to dry completely. Moisture trapped in the container after steam sterilization can lead to bacterial growth (biofilm) in the channels and corrosion of the optical and electronic contacts. The container's sterile barrier must be maintained throughout the post-sterilization storage period, which can be days or weeks. The vent that provides this function must be permanently integrated into the container and must survive the same number of sterilization cycles as the container itself—often thousands of cycles over a 10-year service life.
The weldable breathable vent is permanently welded into the port of the sterilization container or tray lid. The ePTFE membrane is selected for its high-temperature resistance, chemical inertness, and exceptional durability. During steam sterilization at 134°C, the vent allows air removal and steam penetration during the pre-vacuum pulses, and steam egress and filtered air ingress during the drying phase. The highly hydrophobic membrane prevents any liquid water from entering during the drying phase or during storage. After the cycle, the 0.2-micron pore structure is a permanent sterile barrier. The vent is validated to maintain its sterility, airflow, and mechanical integrity for 1,000+ autoclave cycles. It is compatible with EtO and H₂O₂ plasma low-temperature sterilization methods.

The vent is welded into a port on the sterilization container lid. During steam sterilization pre-vacuum, the vent allows air to be rapidly pumped out of the container. During the exposure phase, steam enters through the vent to sterilize the instrument surfaces. During the post-vacuum drying phase, the steam is evacuated and dry, filtered air is drawn back in through the vent to dry the instruments. The hydrophobic membrane prevents any moisture or contaminated air from entering after the cycle. The sterile container is then stored. When the circulating nurse opens the container in the operating room, the sterile instruments are presented dry and ready for immediate use. The vent withstands repeated cycles without membrane or weld failure.
Identify the sterilization method(s) used for the specific instruments: steam, EtO, or H₂O₂ plasma.
Determine the container material and select a weldable vent carrier that is compatible for a strong, long-lasting bond.
Calculate the container volume and the sterilizer vacuum ramp rate to size the vent airflow.
Validate the complete container system: sterilant penetration, drying efficiency, bacterial barrier, and accelerated cycle life testing.
For steam sterilization, confirm that the vent's water entry pressure is sufficient to prevent moisture ingress during the drying and storage phases.
Q: How many sterilization cycles is the vent rated for?
A: The vent is validated for a minimum of 1,000 steam sterilization cycles, matching the expected service life of a high-quality rigid sterilization container.Q: Will the vent become clogged over time with repeated exposure to steam?
A: The hydrophobic ePTFE membrane resists water and steam condensation. It maintains its breathability through the rated cycle life.Q: Can the vent be replaced if it is damaged, or is it permanently integrated?
A: The vent is typically permanently welded into the container. We work with container manufacturers to ensure the vent's durability matches the container's service life. Replaceable vent inserts are also available for some designs.Q: Is the vent compatible with the cleaning and disinfection agents used on the container exterior between uses?
A: Yes, the ePTFE membrane and the carrier material are chemically resistant to common hospital-grade disinfectants.Q: Does the vent affect the drying performance of the container in the autoclave?
A: The vent's high airflow capacity supports efficient drying. The container and load must be properly configured to allow condensate drainage, and the vent provides the filtered air pathway for moisture removal.
