Product Overview

Critically, it instantly reseals when the internal pressure drops below the cracking pressure, preventing the ingress of external oxygen, which would oxidize the coffee oils and cause rapid staling. This valve is the essential packaging component that enables roasters to package their coffee immediately after roasting, locking in peak freshness without the risk of bag failure during transport and storage.

Cause

Freshly roasted coffee beans undergo a process called degassing. The roasting process generates carbon dioxide within the bean's cellular structure. After roasting, this CO₂ is gradually released—a process that continues for days or weeks depending on the roast profile and bean origin. If freshly roasted coffee is sealed immediately in a gas-tight bag, the accumulating CO₂ will inflate the bag into a taut balloon. Eventually, the internal pressure will exceed the bag seal strength, causing the bag to burst open at the seams—a complete loss of the product and a mess during transport. To avoid this, roasters have traditionally waited days before packaging, but this allows volatile aroma compounds to escape and the coffee to begin staling. The one-way degassing valve allows the roaster to package the coffee immediately after roasting. The CO₂ can escape, but oxygen cannot enter, preserving the bean's precious volatile aromatics and oils at their peak freshness.

Solution

The one-way degassing valve is heat-sealed to the inside of the coffee bag, with the valve body penetrating through a pre-punched hole to the outside. Inside the valve, a thin layer of ePTFE membrane acts as the primary liquid and particulate barrier, while a flexible silicone diaphragm rests against a precision seat. When the CO₂ pressure inside the bag builds to a predetermined low cracking pressure—typically just a few millibars above atmospheric—the gas pressure lifts the diaphragm off its seat, allowing the CO₂ to vent through the ePTFE membrane and out of the valve. When the pressure equalizes, the diaphragm instantly reseals, preventing any backflow of oxygen-rich external air. The ePTFE membrane ensures that even if the valve is exposed to coffee oils or fine grounds, the sealing surface remains clean and functional. The valve's compact, low-profile design does not interfere with the stacking, display, or aesthetics of the coffee bag.

How It Works

The valve is heat-sealed onto the interior wall of the coffee bag, with the exhaust port aligned through a hole in the bag film. After the coffee is packaged and sealed, the beans continue to degas. The internal pressure gradually rises as CO₂ accumulates. When the pressure reaches the valve's cracking pressure (2-5 mbar), the flexible silicone diaphragm lifts, and the CO₂ flows through the ePTFE membrane and out of the valve. The ePTFE membrane captures any coffee oil mist or fine particles, preventing them from fouling the diaphragm seat. Once the excess pressure is released, the diaphragm immediately returns to its seated position, forming an airtight seal that blocks external oxygen from entering. This cycle repeats continuously over the days and weeks of degassing, automatically maintaining the bag at a safe, near-ambient pressure.
