EPTFE Chemical Resistant Vent Plug For Acid & Solvent Drum Packaging
The ePTFE chemical resistant vent plug for acid and solvent drum packaging is an ultra-high chemical resistance pressure management component engineered for the most aggressive chemical containment applications. This vent plug integrates an exceptionally chemically inert, heavy-duty ePTFE membrane with a solid, corrosion-proof PTFE or high-chemical-resistance PP body, designed to be screwed or welded into the dedicated vent port of drums, jerricans, and containers used to package fuming nitric acid, concentrated hydrochloric acid, methylene chloride, , , and other highly aggressive solvents and acids. The vent provides continuous, safe pressure equalization during storage and transport, preventing the dangerous pressure buildup from volatile solvent vapors or the hydrogen gas generated by acid-metal reactions. The membrane is completely inert to these chemicals—it will not swell, soften, crack, or leach. The solid PTFE or high-resistance PP body ensures that no part of the vent is attacked by the chemical vapors or liquid, providing a service life that matches the container itself.
Highly aggressive acids and solvents represent the extreme frontier of chemical packaging. Concentrated nitric acid is a powerful oxidizer that attacks most plastics and metals. Methylene chloride and are aggressive solvents that swell and dissolve many polymers and adhesives. Hydrochloric acid releases corrosive hydrogen chloride vapors. These chemicals demand packaging materials that are virtually chemically inert. A standard PP or PE vent plug, while adequate for many industrial chemicals, will eventually be attacked by these aggressive substances—softening, cracking, or being permeated by the vapor. Additionally, many of these solvents have high vapor pressures at ambient temperature, generating significant internal drum pressure that must be vented. A vent failure in an acid or solvent drum is not just a product loss; it is a serious safety and environmental incident.
The ePTFE chemical resistant vent plug is built from the most chemically inert materials available. The ePTFE membrane is completely impervious to all acids, alkalis, and solvents under normal packaging conditions—the only materials that attack it are molten alkali metals and elemental fluorine at high temperatures, neither of which is a packaged chemical. The optional solid PTFE body shares this universal chemical inertness. For less extreme but still demanding applications, a high-chemical-resistance PP body is available. The vent continuously equalizes pressure, preventing dangerous over-pressurization and safely venting solvent vapors or reaction gases. The membrane is a complete liquid barrier, preventing any chemical spillage even if the drum is tipped.

The vent plug is screwed or welded into the drum's dedicated vent port. As the solvent vapors or reaction gases generate pressure, they pass through the chemically inert ePTFE membrane and vent safely to the atmosphere. The membrane blocks any liquid from escaping. The solid PTFE or high-resistance PP body is unaffected by the aggressive chemical vapors or liquid contact. The drum remains at ambient pressure, safe to handle and transport.
