Cause

Cooking oils—soybean, canola, olive, sunflower—and thick condiment sauces—oyster sauce, hoisin, ketchup, mayonnaise—are commonly packaged in PET or HDPE bottles. The consumer experience of pouring from these bottles is universally frustrating. As liquid exits, air must enter to replace the volume. In an unvented bottle, air enters in sporadic, violent gulps through the pour opening, interrupting the smooth flow of liquid and causing the characteristic "glug-glug" sound and splashing. For thick sauces, the problem is even worse: the viscous liquid can form a seal at the bottle neck, completely preventing air ingress and stopping the flow. The consumer must squeeze the bottle forcefully, often causing a sudden, messy eruption. Over time, the repeated vacuum cycles cause the bottle sidewalls to permanently collapse inward, making the bottle look unattractive and partially empty. A simple open vent in the cap would allow air in but would also allow the oil or sauce to leak out when the bottle is tipped or stored on its side—a messy and unacceptable failure.

The PE foam ePTFE breathable induction seal liner is the elegant, invisible fix. The liner is induction-sealed to the bottle neck, providing a hermetic, tamper-evident seal. When the consumer opens the bottle and removes the liner, they gain access to the product. However, for bottles designed with a pour-through cap or a dispensing closure that remains in place, the liner can be configured to remain in the cap, providing continuous air return. As the consumer pours oil or squeezes sauce, the ePTFE membrane window allows a smooth, continuous stream of filtered air to enter the bottle headspace. The flow is laminar and silent—no glugging, no splashing. The oleophobic membrane treatment is critical: it prevents the long-chain fatty acids and oils from wetting the pore structure and blocking airflow. The membrane is also a barrier to dust and bacteria, protecting the product from external contamination during use.

How It Works

The induction seal liner is placed inside the bottle cap and sealed to the bottle neck. For applications where the cap remains in place during use (e.g., a disc-top or flip-top cap with a dispensing orifice), the liner remains in the cap after the consumer removes the tamper-evident seal layer. When the consumer inverts the bottle and pours, the liquid flows out through the dispensing opening. Simultaneously, ambient air is drawn into the bottle through the ePTFE membrane window in the liner. The air enters smoothly and continuously, replacing the dispensed volume. The oleophobic membrane prevents the oil or sauce from penetrating the vent, ensuring it stays dry and breathable. The bottle does not collapse, and the pour is smooth from start to finish.
