Product Description

Adhesive EPTFE Acoustic Vent For Smartphones IP68 Waterproof Sound Transmission

Product Overview

The adhesive ePTFE acoustic vent for smartphones is a precision-engineered protective component that enables crystal-clear sound transmission from internal speakers, earpiece receivers, and MEMS microphones while maintaining full IP68 waterproof and dustproof protection. This vent features an ultra-thin ePTFE acoustic membrane—optimized for minimal sound attenuation and flat frequency response—bonded to a durable, high-temperature-resistant adhesive backing designed for automated pick-and-place assembly. It protects the smartphone's acoustic ports from water immersion, dust ingress, and everyday contaminants such as sweat, skin oils, and cosmetic residues. By providing a physical barrier that is acoustically transparent, this vent allows smartphone manufacturers to achieve the highest level of ingress protection without compromising audio quality for voice calls, media playback, or voice assistant functionality.

Cause

The modern smartphone contains multiple acoustic transducers—a bottom-firing speaker, an earpiece receiver, and two to four MEMS microphones for voice pickup, noise cancellation, and video recording. Each transducer requires an open port to the external environment for sound waves to exit or enter. These ports are direct pathways for water, dust, pocket lint, and liquid spills to reach the delicate transducer diaphragms and internal electronics. A single drop of water or sweat entering through the speaker grille can muffle the speaker output, corrode the MEMS microphone membrane, or short-circuit the audio amplifier circuitry. Consumers increasingly expect their devices to survive accidental drops in water, use in rain, and exposure to sweat during workouts. To achieve IP68 ratings—continuous immersion beyond 1 meter—the acoustic ports must be sealed without blocking the sound. Traditional mesh screens provide some dust protection but fail completely as a water barrier under any immersion pressure. The smartphone industry's relentless drive toward thinner, bezel-less designs leaves less space for complex mechanical seals, making a thin, adhesive-applied acoustic membrane the ideal solution.

Solution

The adhesive ePTFE acoustic vent provides a complete solution for acoustic port protection. The ePTFE membrane, typically 20-50 microns thick, contains billions of microscopic pores that are large enough for sound waves to pass with minimal attenuation—typically less than 2-3 dB insertion loss across the voice band (300 Hz to 3.4 kHz) and full audio band (20 Hz to 20 kHz). These same pores are thousands of times smaller than the smallest water droplets, providing an absolute liquid barrier even under the hydrostatic pressure of IP68 immersion. The membrane is treated with an oleophobic coating that repels skin oils, sweat, and cosmetic residues, preventing pore blockage that would otherwise degrade acoustic performance over time. The vent is supplied as a die-cut patch on a roll, with a pressure-sensitive adhesive backing optimized for bonding to the smartphone's metal frame, glass back, or ceramic housing. It is fully compatible with high-speed SMT pick-and-place automation, enabling integration into the device assembly process without adding cycle time or manual labor.

How It Works

The acoustic vent is applied directly over the smartphone's speaker or microphone port on the inside surface of the housing, before or after the transducer is installed. Sound waves generated by the speaker pass through the ePTFE membrane's open pore structure with minimal energy loss—the membrane vibrates sympathetically with the sound pressure waves, acting as a lightweight, flexible diaphragm. Sound waves entering through the microphone port similarly pass through the membrane to reach the MEMS microphone's acoustic transducer. When the phone is submerged in water, the hydrostatic pressure pushes water against the membrane. The pore size of approximately 0.2-1.0 microns is too small for liquid water molecules (which are held together by strong surface tension) to penetrate, even under the elevated pressure of immersion. The oleophobic treatment prevents skin oils, sweat, and cosmetic residues from wetting the membrane surface, maintaining long-term acoustic transparency.

How To Choose
  1. Identify the specific acoustic transducer the vent will protect: speaker ports typically require lower insertion loss; microphone ports may tolerate slightly higher loss for better water protection.

  2. Determine the target IP rating: IP67 (1m immersion) or IP68 (deeper/longer immersion) dictates the required water entry pressure rating.

  3. Select the membrane thickness and pore structure based on the acoustic performance requirements: thinner membranes offer lower insertion loss but slightly reduced water pressure resistance.

  4. Choose the adhesive formulation based on the housing substrate material and the assembly process: reflow-compatible adhesive for pre-solder application, pressure-sensitive for post-assembly attachment.

  5. Provide the acoustic port geometry for custom die-cut vent sizing and shape optimization.

FAQ
  • Q: Will the acoustic vent affect the loudness of my smartphone's speaker?

A: The vent introduces a minimal insertion loss, typically less than 2.5 dB at 1 kHz. This is imperceptible to most users and can be compensated for with a slight amplifier gain adjustment in the audio DSP settings.

  • Q: Can the vent withstand the heat of the reflow soldering process if applied before PCB assembly?

A: Yes, our reflow-compatible adhesive and ePTFE membrane are rated to survive peak reflow temperatures up to 260°C, allowing the vent to be applied before the PCB assembly process.

  • Q: Does the oleophobic coating wear off over time with repeated exposure to skin oils?

A: The oleophobic treatment is a permanent molecular modification of the ePTFE surface. It does not wash off or wear away over the device's service life.

  • Q: How does the vent affect the frequency response of the microphone for voice pickup?

A: The vent is engineered for flat frequency response across the voice band. It does not introduce peaks, dips, or phase shifts that would degrade voice quality or noise cancellation performance.

  • Q: Can the vent be color-matched to the smartphone housing?

A: The natural ePTFE membrane is white. For dark-colored grilles, we can provide a black-dyed membrane option that maintains the same acoustic and waterproof performance.
