The D17 ePTFE breathable vent plug is a high-flow pressure management device purpose-built for agrochemical IBC totes, large drums, and bulk shipping containers. Its 17mm mounting body houses an exceptionally breathable ePTFE membrane that can handle the extreme airflow demands of filling, discharging, and thermal ventilation in volumes up to 1250 liters. This plug delivers continuous, bidirectional pressure equalization while maintaining a 100% waterproof and dust-tight seal. Engineered for the rigorous UN and ADR transport requirements, it ensures that intermediate bulk containers carrying hazardous pesticides, liquid fertilizers, and fumigants arrive at their destination safely, without deformation, leakage, or dangerous pressure buildup.

Cause

IBC totes and large agrochemical drums present the most demanding ventilation challenges in the agricultural supply chain. An IBC being pumped out at 50 liters per minute requires a corresponding volume of air to enter, otherwise, the rigid cage will collapse the inner bottle. In tropical climates, solar heating can cause rapid vapor expansion, while sudden rainstorms can create an instant vacuum. Many IBC closures lack integrated high-flow vents, forcing operators to loosen caps during dispensing—a hazardous practice that allows VOC emissions and contamination risks. Standard low-flow vents are simply not adequate for the breathing rates these large containers demand.

The D17 high-flow vent plug is specifically designed to match the respiration rate of IBC totes and large drums. The expanded membrane area in its 17mm format allows for airflow exceeding 1500 ml/min, quickly neutralizing pressure differentials during high-speed filling and dispensing. Its HDPE body can be thermally welded into IBC lids, drum caps, or dedicated breather ports, creating a gas-tight, tamper-evident seal. The ePTFE membrane’s enhanced oleophobic treatment resists the low-surface-tension agrochemicals commonly stored in IBCs, preventing liquid seepage even when the vent is submerged during tank cleaning or heavy rain exposure.

How It Works

When the IBC is pumped out, a partial vacuum forms. Ambient air rushes through the ePTFE membrane’s interconnected pore network to fill the increasing headspace, maintaining near-ambient pressure and allowing smooth, continuous flow. When the container is heated, expanding gases escape through the same pathway. The membrane’s microstructure is engineered for low pressure drop even at high flow rates, meaning the pressure differential required to move air is minimal. This protects the IBC’s inner bottle from stress and prevents the outer cage from distorting.
