Cause

Chemical drums and liquid fertilizer tanks face intense internal pressure dynamics. A 200-liter drum exposed to solar radiation can develop over 1 bar of positive pressure, risking lid blow-off or seam rupture. As tanks are emptied via pump, a powerful vacuum forms that can cause catastrophic implosion. Liquid fertilizers containing ammonium or urea derivatives slowly release gases. Furthermore, traditional large bung vents or desiccant breathers are often costly, complex, and difficult to weld reliably into HDPE drum closures. Inadequate venting leads to drum deformation, stack instability, and the dangerous need for manual pressure release before decanting.

How It Works

The D17 vent operates on the same microporous ePTFE principle as smaller vents but with enhanced flow capacity. The larger membrane disc contains billions of nanopores—20,000 times smaller than a water droplet yet 700 times larger than an air molecule. When internal drum pressure rises from heat or gas generation, air molecules rapidly exit through the membrane. When liquid is pumped out, ambient air flows in to replace the displaced volume instantly. The high water entry pressure ensures that even with the drum fully inverted or the tank submerged during cleaning, no liquid penetrates the barrier.
