Smartwatch Mic Protection EPTFE Waterproof Acoustic Vent Membrane
This miniature EPTFE waterproof acoustic vent is purpose-built for the microphones in smartwatches and fitness trackers, where space is at an absolute premium and exposure to sweat, soaps, and chlorinated water is constant. The membrane is as thin as 0.10 mm and can be die-cut to diameters as small as 2 mm, fitting into the tiniest acoustic ports. It provides robust IP68 protection while allowing the wearer to take calls via Bluetooth, issue voice commands, and record voice memos directly from the wrist. The membrane’s biocompatibility has been certified to ISO 10993-5 and -10, ensuring it is safe for prolonged skin contact. A key differentiator is its salt-water resilience: the hydrophobic pores do not allow salt crystals to form after sweat evaporation, which is a common failure mode for watches worn during exercise. Additionally, the vent is engineered to withstand the dynamic pressure changes encountered during swimming strokes and diving, where external water pressure rapidly fluctuates.
Smartwatch microphones are surrounded by sweat, skin oils, sunscreen, and occasionally submerged in seawater or pools. Traditional microphone protection either suffocates the tiny mic (losing voice quality) or gradually corrodes due to saline buildup. This EPTFE vent creates an impermeable liquid barrier that also allows vapor to escape, preventing internal condensation. It equalizes pressure between the mic cavity and the environment, which is crucial because the sealed watch case experiences thermal expansion from body heat and electronic components. Without this equalization, the microphone diaphragm would be stressed and lose sensitivity. The solution enables wearable OEMs to confidently advertise swim-proof and gym-proof devices without compromising the voice call experience that consumers expect. The ultra-thin adhesive does not ghost or migrate, and the vent remains acoustically transparent even after thousands of hours of wear.

The ePTFE’s micropores are small enough to prevent liquid entry via capillary action—water must exert more than 0.15 MPa of pressure to penetrate, far more than the pressure generated by a swimming wrist stroke. Sound pressure, however, needs only to displace air, which flows easily through the pores. When a watch is submerged, a thin layer of air remains trapped against the membrane’s outer surface due to its superhydrophobicity, maintaining an acoustic path. After swimming, fresh water rinsing removes salt and chlorine; the pores do not retain residue.
Q1: Can I wear the watch in a sauna or hot tub?
A: The membrane handles temperatures up to 100°C and will not lose integrity. However, high-pressure steam jets could exceed the WEP. For sauna use, the vent will prevent humidity ingress but always check the watch OEM’s temperature ratings.
Q2: Will sunscreen permanently clog the pores?
A: The oleophobic treatment means most sunscreens can be wiped off with a damp cloth. If some residue remains, the large number of pores ensures plenty of open channels remain for sound.
Q3: Is the adhesive safe for sensitive skin?
A: We offer a silicone-based adhesive option that is hypoallergenic and passes skin sensitization tests. The vent is mounted internally, so adhesive does not directly contact the wearer.
